Roots are where it is at... that's WHY Butler's Chamaedorea Hybrid is different?

All plants need a good healthy root system and the Chamaedorea also known as the bamboo palm is no different.

The quality of a plant starts with a quality source… be it cutting, seed, or seedling. Chamaedorea's must be grown from seed... there are no short cuts.

Butler's has been using the same selected seed source for our Florida Hybrid for over thirty years. The parent plants have broader leaves than regular Chamaedoreas. These broad leaves provide the plants with more surface area to capture and photosynthesize light. In low light broad leaves are a benefit.

Next… 10 individual seedlings are selected and planted in pots. To save on labor, many palm growers seed directly into the pot. This method produces a full plant "of grass" but reduces the size (caliper) of the trunk and increases disease. This also provides you with a "short term" plant.

At Butler's we take the extra step of time and labor to evenly space out the seedlings so that the plants are not competing with each other for light and each plant can develop a strong root system.

Our evenly spaced seedlings get excellent air flow reducing disease and allowing each plant to develop a good thick caliper and reach its full potential.

You just can't plant in"any old soil". Through our over 30 years of growing Chamaedorea palms we've developed a unique soil blend which is more fibrous than general Canadian mixes and better suited for the plant and the "long haul" indoors.

Most tropicals are recommended to "drain of the excess water" after watering. Why should we produce a plant any differently? So.. to round things out and keep disease out of the soil, all of Butler's Chamaedoreas are grown off the ground from start to finish. This keeps the roots from sitting in puddles of water, keeps out the possible spread of water borne diseases and allows the soil to drain any excess water off.. The end result is a clean vigorous root system ready for long-term indoor service.
